This two-day seminar is an overview of the fundamentals of transit collision investigation. The training will be conducted in a classroom and include outdoor lecture, demonstration, and a multimedia format with opportunities for questions and comments from the participants. Participants in this seminar will acquire an understanding of the fundamentals of transit vehicle collision investigation, the tools and techniques necessary to conduct the investigation, and suggestions on how to use the results of an investigation for accident review and prevention purposes where applicable. Participation in the entire seminar is essential to tie the various instructional blocks together in a meaningful manner.



This class is for operations supervisors, safety managers, road supervisors and anyone else who investigates accidents. This workshop is also suitable for persons desiring an initial overview of collision investigation techniques.


Bruce Johnston is an Associate Instructor with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transportation Safety Institute, instructing both Basic and Advanced Bus Collision courses. Bruce is a retired Army officer and Pierce County Deputy with 13 years in the traffic division investigating fatal and non-fatal collisions. Bruce has a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice and a Masters degree in Business from St. Martin's University.

Steven Strehle is a Senior Associate Instructor with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transportation Safety Institute. Steve specializes in collision investigation training, instructing both the Advanced and Basic Bus Collision Investigation courses. Steve has developed and instructed courses for the US Coast Guard, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Steve retired from law enforcement in August of 2012 after thirty-eight years of combined service in city, federal, and county law enforcement agencies. His last assignment was as a collision investigator and commercial vehicle enforcement officer. Steve holds a Middle Management Certification from Washington State, along with degrees and advanced certifications in several areas of study.


The registration fee is $150 per person. The registration fee includes workshop materials, coffee, water, and snacks. Lunch will be on your own. Make checks payable to the Washington State Transit Insurance Pool.

The class will be held at the Ben Franklin Transit Board Room. Ben Franklin Transit is located at 1000 Columbia Park Trail, Richland, WA. The workshop will begin at 8:30 am and run until 5:00 pm. Lunch will be on your own.

You may cancel your workshop registration without penalty up to Tuesday, January 21st, 2020. 

Cancellations made after 1/21/2020 will be charged the full workshop fee. WSTIP may cancel the class if fewer than 12 people register for the course. If the course is cancelled, participants will receive a complete refund.
