WSTIP has created a 3-day train-the-trainer course for transit trainers. The purpose of this course is to create a cadre of transit trainers who can teach coach operators driving skills and customer service, utilizing the Operator Development Course in a consistent manner, making safety the top priority.

This course is going to lay the foundations of a strong and effective training methodology.  It will emphasize making sure you have all your prep ready and are mentally prepared to train others. The course will cover:

  • Introduction to Adult Learning
  • Principles of Adult Learning
  • Promoting Participation and Retention
  • Presenting Powerfully
  • Delivering Active and Engaging Training
  • Trainer Diplomacy and Assertiveness
  • Trainer Preparedness
  • Delivery and Feedback

Stop 1: 

You will learn to utilize and maximize learning objectives using the Operator Development Course. This course will focus on how to reach the heart and mind, while putting your training together in a coherent way.

Navigating the Turns: 

Learn how to read the room, engage, inspire your audience, and to tell compelling stories that make your safety message stick.  Learn to handle negative feedback, tough questions, and tough audience members.

Staying on Route

This course is for new and seasoned trainers. WSTIP has provided your agency with numerous resources as well as the Operator Development Course as tools for you to use to cover all aspects of training.  This course aims to build on that and enhance your skills.

Arriving at your Destination

Participants will be expected to deliver a 10 to 15-minute brain-friendly lesson and develop an outline for a 1-hour training segment. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate from the Center for Urban Transportation Research out of the University of South Florida.  


Those new to their role as instructors will receive a rock solid foundation to the role of trainer and be ready to take it on when they return to work. Veteran trainers will be refreshed and re-energized by the useful tips and be armed with a different communication model.


Karen is a dynamic trainer with over 20 years’ experience as a trainer, business analyst, and writer.

Her interactive training approach ensures higher levels of participation, retention, and on-the-job application. And, she makes learning fun!

Karen is passionate about clearly communicating, whether in writing, presenting, or collaborating with colleagues. She has a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the Association for Talent Development.

Karen has a Certificate in Instructional Design and is a formidable Scrabble player. Her company, Clarified Concepts, is headquartered in the Seattle area, and designs and delivers customized training to clients internationally. She has multi-year contracts with Washington State and the Department of the Navy, and is a faculty member with American Management Association.


The registration fee is $225 per person. The registration fee includes workshop materials, coffee, water, and snacks. Lunch will be on your own. Make checks payable to the Washington State Transit Insurance Pool.

The class will be held at the WSTIP offices in Olympia. WSTIP is located at 2629 12 Court SW Olympia, WA 98502. The workshop will begin at 8:30 am and run until 5:00 pm. Lunch will be on your own.

You may cancel your workshop registration without penalty up to Tuesday, May 28th.

Cancellations made after 05/29/2019 will be charged the full workshop fee. WSTIP may cancel the class if fewer than 12 people register for the course. If the course is cancelled, participants will receive a complete refund.
