This is the second class of WSTIP's Supervisor School program, which is made up of four classes. Participants can take classes one at a time, or wait until fall 2019 to take all four classes together. Upon finishing the four classes, participants will receive a certificate of completion. Supervisor School is made up of these classes: Stepping Up to Supervisor, Successfully Managing People & Performance, Strategic Tools for Effective Leadership, and Legal Issues for Supervisors.

Class date has been changed to March 5th. 


This training will focus on the importance of doing effective performance management and delineate the purpose of a coaching or counseling session. Participants will learn how to give meaningful feedback about an employee’s performance/behavior; how to prepare and write a performance evaluation; how to communicate with difficult, reluctant, or emotional employees and how to set performance goals and incorporate development. You will be given techniques for making the process of recording performance management less painful. Seminar attendees are welcome to bring sample documents of the employer’s (with permission) performance, coaching, counseling forms to reference during the seminar.


Any individual responsible for supervising or managing the performance of others, conducting coaching or counseling sessions, preparing performance evaluations, and documenting employee performance/behavior.


Janice Corbin has more than 20 years of human resource experience with a law enforcement agency and a large truck manufacturer in the mid-west. As the Human Resources Director for the Seattle Police Department, Janice served as a member of the executive team, and directed the departments collective bargaining efforts for all bargaining groups, civilian and sworn. Janice has a B.A. Degree in Sociology, and completed a number of post graduate courses in personnel and labor relations studies. She is a member of the National Public Employer Association, Society of Human Resource Management Association, and the International Personnel Management Association.


The registration fee is $75 per person. The registration fee includes workshop materials, coffee, water, and snacks. Lunch will be on your own. Make checks payable to the Washington State Transit Insurance Pool.

The class will be held at the WSTIP office in Olympia. WSTIP is located at 2629 12th Court SW, Olympia, WA 98502. The workshop will begin at 8:30 am and run until 5:00 pm. Lunch will be on your own.

You may cancel your workshop registration without penalty up to Thursday, February 5, 2019.

Cancellations made after 02/05/2019 will be charged the full workshop fee. WSTIP may cancel the class if fewer than 12 people register for the course. If the course is cancelled, participants will receive a complete refund.
