To work with other local agencies, to combine grant monies in order to create a new drug & alcohol program training video specific to transit.
September 2009 to September 2010
Transit agencies (and others) will utilize the training DVD for new hire employee's initial orientation, as required by the FTA.  The video may also be used for agency-wide refresher training, in addition to new hire orientation.  It will meet our training needs.

The training DVDs currently on the market do not deal specifically with transit.  The single video that does address transit is extremely outdated and lacks information, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicine awareness.
1. Many training materials on the market are geared toward “truck drivers”, are not transit specific.
2. Materials are outdated.  We need current Drug and Alcohol Awareness information that captures the rise in meth, heroin, morphine and methadone use as an example.
3. We need to meet FTA Drug and Alcohol Training requirements
4. There is an increase use among our employees of Prescription and Over the Counter medicines with no training video materials address this issue
The WSTA HR Committee’s Drug and Alcohol Program Managers subcommittee will band together to produce an updated and greatly needed, more transit specific, Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training materials including awareness on Prescription and Over-the-counter medicines.  This training DVD will meet the DOT and FTA minimum requirements and best practices for awareness training on prescription and over the counter medicine use and abuse.  This will assist the trainer in presenting an effective and informational training program.  This training DVD could be shared with many other transit agencies in the US.

To develop and produce updated employee drug and alcohol D&A) and Prescription and over the counter (RX OTC) awareness training dvd that meets and contains FTA required training elements
Sept. 2009 - Sept. 2010
Transit agencies (and others) will utilize the training DVD for new hire employees intial required FTA D&A training and for agency refresher training.  It will meet current training needs, current training video that many of us use is out-dated, inappropriate and lacking pertinent information, and does not cover OTC/RX awareness.
Most available training materials are geared toward truck drivers, do not contain required FTA/DOT training info, materials are outdated, need more info on meth, heroinm morphine and methadoen use.  There is an increase among employees on RX/OTC drug use and we need to address this issue and provide awareness information.
WSTA HR Committee's D&A Program Managers Subcommittee will band toegher to produce an updated and greatly needed, transit specific D&A awareness training program including awareness information on RX and OTC medications use and abuse.  This dvd will assist the trainer in presenting an effective and informational training program that also meets the requirement of FTA and DOT.  This training DVD could be shared w/other transits in the US

  • explore techniques to use to deflect and defend

Columbia County Public Transportation wants to be able to keep current and provide excellent training sessions to our drivers.  We would like to apply for this risk managment grant to use towards the purchase of a laptop computer and projector that will be used in our training room.  Our primary goal is to provide up to date training opportunities to our staff.
Our training program is ongoing.
The results will be highly trained drivers by the use of up to date modern technology that can assist us in the trainings we have to offer.  Highly skilled and knowledgeable drivers with few incidents/accidents will provide us with a measurement on the results.
CCPT was in the need of acquiring this equipment in order to provide some of the trainings that previous to purchasing this equipment were difficult to present to our drivers due to not having this modern technology.  We were unable to use state grant funding for this equipment but felt that it was very important to purchase this in order to offer the best training possible to our staff.  This equipment has been an awesome investment to our training program.
The basic elements of this program are to have the equipment available to provide excellent training to our staff.  We offer monthly trainings to our drivers and prior to the purchase of this equipment we had only a TV/VCR/DVD player.  This equipment allows us to purchase up to date training and have the technology requirements to present these new trainings.

For vehicle accidents, both the total number of accidents and the ratio of accidents to miles driven as reviewed with the goal of decreasing the number of accidents/incidents.

Don Shagam, Training, Safety and Security Coordinatordshagam@ci.evertett.wa.us
To reduce instances of customer disputes.  Disputes are both a customer service and a safety issue.  An angry passenger takes the Operator's attention from defensive driving practices.  An Operator who takes offense may elevate the issue instead of letting it go.  This can lead to assualts on the Operator and/or pasengers.  If the assualt happens while the bus is moving, it could lead to a serious collision.  To promote customer service excellence to those riding Everett Transit and to be free of disputes.
Begining March 15th and continue annually.
A reduction in the numbers of customer comments calls and e-mails would be evident from the numbers we generally receive about cutomer service issues.  This would reduce the time necessary to field, record, investigate on reply to customer comments.  This would free up time for Customer Service Representitves, Bus and Paratransit Supervisors, Training Coordinators, First Line Supervisors and Managers.  Our passengers would also enjoy the benifits of a non confrontational ride when are Operators let things go rather than challenging the passengers.
We have begun offering Egrometrics Customer Service video training program for refresher and remidial training.  We are interested in secureing or developing an anger management course that we could require repeat offenders to attend.
The first phase is to place posters in our buses, paratransit vans and customer service stations to inform the public and our employees of our new "High Five" program.  The second phase is to distribute business card size high five cards for passengers to give to Operators whose professionalism.  The third phase would be to give certificates of recognition at the annual Operations meeting and to give gift cards to Operators who turn in the High Five cards they were presented.

Provide up-to-date initial and refresher safety training to Intercity Transit Facilities and Vehicle Maintenance personnel.
June 1, 2010 - ongoing
The Training Coordinator will initiate and track safety training for Intercity Transit's Maintenance personnel.  Results will be measured by using the Learning Management System (LMS) provided by the online training vendor.

For example, 79% of Maintenance personnel are currently overdue for annual Bloodborne Pathogens training.  As we get employees scheduled and through the training, we will be able to track progress using the LMS toward our goal of 100% complete.  We will also do this for 13 other safety training courses that we've identified as critical.
According to WISHA and OSHA requirements, Intercity Transit's Maintenance employees must complete safety training in 14 areas.  Providing this training is a challenge since the department can only release 2 or 3 employees (at most) for classes.  The best option in this case is computer-based training where one to three employees can be released for part of their shifts to complete the training on their own.

Intercity Transit would like to implement online, computer-based safety training for Maintenance employees.  Online web-based training has a distinct advantage over CDROM-based training because the training vendor continuously updates the training materials to ensure they're current and in compliance with local and federal laws.

We have already purchased laptop computers that will be set aside for training purposes.  We are also in negotiations with an online training vendor to subscribe to their service.
The basic elements to implement an online training program are:
  • Training computers and associated equipment (already purchased).
  • Subscription to online safety training service (research completed and currently reviewing quote for ClarityNET service from Coastal Training Technologies).
  • Space to set up computers for training (at this time, we will reserve our Board Room for periods of time and personnel will use the computers there).
